Frequently Asked Questions

How many named colors are there?

There are 147 named colors in the CSS specification, including standard colors and extended HTML color names.

How is "closest" determined?

The tool uses the CIE76 Delta E formula in LAB color space, which measures perceptual color difference as the human eye sees it. Lower Delta E means more similar.

Why doesn't my color match exactly?

Most colors don't have an exact named match. The named colors are a fixed set, and your custom color may fall between them. The tool finds the closest perceptual match.
