Frequently Asked Questions

What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a value-added tax levied on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption. It is a multi-stage tax collected at each point of sale in the supply chain, with the final burden falling on the end consumer. GST replaces multiple indirect taxes with a single unified tax, simplifying the taxation system.

What is the difference between GST Exclusive and GST Inclusive?

GST Exclusive means the price does not include GST. You need to add the GST amount on top of the listed price. For example, if a product is listed at $100 with 18% GST exclusive, the total price is $118. GST Inclusive means the price already includes GST. To find the original price before tax, you need to remove the GST component. For example, if a product costs $118 with 18% GST inclusive, the original price was $100.

How do I calculate GST Exclusive?

To calculate GST Exclusive (add GST to a net price): First, multiply the net amount by the GST rate and divide by 100 to get the GST amount. Then add the GST amount to the net amount to get the gross amount. For example, with a net price of $500 and 18% GST: GST Amount = $500 × 18/100 = $90. Gross Amount = $500 + $90 = $590.

How do I calculate GST Inclusive?

To calculate GST Inclusive (remove GST from a gross price): Multiply the gross amount by the GST rate, then divide by (100 + GST rate) to get the GST amount. Subtract the GST amount from the gross amount to get the net amount. For example, with a gross price of $590 and 18% GST: GST Amount = $590 × 18/(100+18) = $90. Net Amount = $590 - $90 = $500.

What is the GST rate in India?

India has a multi-tier GST structure with rates of 0%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. The 0% rate applies to essential items like fresh food. The 3% rate applies to precious metals. The 5% rate covers essential items like packaged food and transport. The 12% and 18% rates are standard rates for most goods and services. The 28% rate applies to luxury items and sin goods. Additionally, CGST and SGST split the tax equally for intra-state supplies, while IGST applies for inter-state supplies.

Can I use a custom GST rate?

Yes! Select "Custom" from the GST Rate dropdown and enter any rate you need. This is useful for countries with rates not listed in the presets, for special promotional rates, or for specific product categories with unique tax rates.
