About Leap Years

A leap year occurs every 4 years to keep our calendar in alignment with Earth's orbit around the Sun. A year has 365.25 days approximately, so we add an extra day (February 29) every 4 years. However, years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400.

Why do we need leap years?

Earth takes approximately 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. Without leap years, our calendar would drift by about 6 hours per year, and seasons would gradually shift out of sync.

When is the next leap year?

The next leap year after 2024 is 2028. Leap years occur every 4 years: 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, and so on.
